 Address- normally refers to one's e-mail address, which can be series of letters or numbers. When referring to a World Wide Web site, an address is the URL.

Backbone- refers to main international telecommunications networks that carry internet traffic among national, regional and local networks.

Bandwidth- is a high-tech term used to describe the amount of data that can travel in a given time-usually one second-across a network or a connection to a network, such as a modem. When you send a message across the Ineternet, you are using part of its banwidth, just as your car takes up space on the freeway.

Baud or Bits Per Second (BPS)- a measure of how fast a modem can send and receive information; more is better. You will want a modem with rating of at least 28,000 bps to access is available through the phone company (DSL) or your cable company. While these high-speed connections are great, they aren't required, and a modem connection is certainly sufficient.

Browser- refers to software that allows a user to navigate the World Wide Wibe. The two most popular Internet browsers are Netscape and Micosoft's Internet Explorer.

Chat- an Internet feature that allows two or more people to communicate live with each other by typing messages. This is like a telephone conversation, but using typed messages on computers.

Client- refers to a computer attached to any network, including the Internet. The term is also used to describe personal-computer software that gives access to and enables the use of the Internet, either by modem connection or by connection to a local area network (LAN) and related hardware. A client can also refer to a program like a web browser that you use to retrieve data, or a service, from a server on the internet.

Conversion Rate- a marketing term that measures the percentage of orders from the total numbers of visits to a website over a period of time. Conversion rates ont eh web today average 2 percent, meaning that a website will probably get two orders for every hundred people who come to the site.

Cyberspace- a popular term (first used by author William Gibson) for the space that seems to exit within computers and computer networks.

Domain Name- an Internet address, for example biggestprofitsonline.com. Here are six domain extensions: .com used for businesses, edu for educational institutions, .gov for government agencies, .org for organizations usually nonprofit, .mil for military, and net for networks. The domain name is an important part of all Internet addresses; e.g., name@domainname.com or www.domainname.com.
